Our pick of the best Dog Beds

Dogs sleep more than we do; it’s as simple as that. While 8 hours a day seems to be the higher end of the recommended range for adult humans, canines should sleep on average from 12-14 hours according to the American Kennel Club (Fido’s version of a research institute.)

This means that, according to both the age and needs of you and your dog, your dog might sleep twice as much as you do during an average cycle!

To function at an optimal level, your dog requires enough sleep. All of the same symptoms we suffer due to under sleep will easily apply to Fido. Not sleeping enough could affect everything from Fido’s appetite to even his bark (they prefer to call it speech.)

Your best friend isn’t just sleeping at night either! Canines take naps throughout the day, especially when they’re bored. Let’s see where we’re at.

We’ve agreed that your best friend sleeps a lot, and also that he does so during odd hours. We know his sleep is important as well. What about that sleeping dog’s comfort?

Friends Forever Orthopedic Dog Bed

Friends Forever Orthopedic Dog Bed

The size of the bed clocks in at 36” x 28” x 9”. If you are unfamiliar, you could accommodate one medium to a large sized dog or two smaller sized ones with such a bed. The bed also has a removable cover (via zipper) that can be separated from the memory foam and independently cleaned.

This cover can even be machine washed with no problems. The design is much more heavy duty than a discount bin dog bed. That’s an important feature for all 10 beds on this list (even the cost-effective ones.)

PROS

  • Large and rugged design.
  • Easy to clean.
  • Memory foam mattress.

CONS

  • Mattress cover made from frail nylon-like material.
  • It’s a bit costly for the size of each model.

MidWest Deluxe Bolster Bed

MidWest Deluxe Bolster Bed

Requires a lot less money to buy than the previously mentioned model. The idea with this bed is for it to be more readily compatible with items such as carrier cages and the such. It has a simple design and a low profile.

The covering has fur on it which Fido is likely to appreciate for sure (feels like he’s cuddling.) Some pet owners take issue with such materials, however. If you own a short-haired breed, and such messes concern you, this could be a potential issue.

PROS

  • One of the most price efficient models on the list.
  • Comes in a large variety of sizes.
  • Simple (and low) enough to work well inside of carriers.

CONS

  • As mentioned above, it’s a very simple design (you get what you pay for.)
  • Some users have been known to have issues with the fur material on the cover (Fido has fur too, so this might be irrelevant to you.)

Joyelf Orthopedic Dog Bed

Joyelf Orthopedic Dog Bed

Somewhere in between the price points for our list items #10, and #9 comes the Joyelf Orthopedic Dog Bed. This bed offers an orthopedic memory foam mattress like the Friends Forever does. Several outside materials are used with this bed’s design though.

A standard, almost vinyl-like siding runs along the perimeter of the bed. After this comes a suede-like surface, and finally Fido’s special laying material.

This material is very blanket like in nature (but still furry.) Essentially, you’ll love the outside and your dog will love the inside. This is the first bed on the list fitting this description.

PROS

  • Multi-surface design element to cover.
  • High quality for a medium tiered price.
  • RP cotton (much softer) is used within the design.

CONS

  • This is one zipper placement that Fido is more likely to figure out (dead bed!)
  • Fido’s sleep mat portion still sheds a bit; Problem as with #9 occurs for some pet owners because of this.

PetFusion Large Dog Bed

PetFusion Large Dog Bed

One important take away for the PetFusion Large Dog Bed is that it is similar to #10 on the list (Friend’s Forever.) This device met some pretty heavy duty production and safety standards according to the European Safety Council.

Many pet owners consider this memory foam to be of a preferred design for dogs that are experiencing arthritic pain. This model might be perfect for an older animal because of this. If your dog is older, this model shouldn’t go overlooked.

PROS

  • Size is better suited for dogs over 100 lbs.
  • The design might suit arthritic dogs better.
  • Passes a stricter set of European safety standards (Fido won’t find this zipper!)

CONS

  • A bit costlier (as with #10.)
  • Some pet owners feel the cover material could be a bit thicker.

ASCPA Microtech Striped Dog Bed

ASCPA Microtech Striped Dog Bed

This hybrid model, The ASCPA Microtech Striped Dog Bed, might not have a fancy memory foam mattress, but it does have an easy to wipe clean polyester exterior.

It is also a bit sturdier than the other bed in the low-cost price range (#9 the Midwest Deluxe model.) The only really bad news for those eyeing this bed? If you don’t like the size of this one then you’re out of luck!

PROS

  • Polyester material no likely to leave a mess (it can be wiped.)
  • A hybrid design that is somewhere between the economic and high end.
  • Actually feels quite soft and seems to hold heat well.

CONS

  • Only comes in one size.
  • Not the greatest interior for Fido.

Midwest Homes for Pets Deluxe Pet Bed

Midwest Homes for Pets Deluxe Pet Bed

Number 5 on the list is another side less model that is best utilized as Fido’s cage bed. It's called the Midwest Homes for Pets Deluxe Pet Bed. A lot of pet owners enjoy attaching this particular simple model to a dog bed frame to create a more complete bed experience for the dog.

The material is furry, without being messy. The surface is meant to be, “no-stick,” however the effect is hit or miss really. It’s not the type of expensive bed where you would be afraid to purchase it and find out your own feelings though. One would never “try,” a memory foam model by simply buying it, would they?

PROS

  • Furry cover, but it’s not of a looped design (furry but not messy and also soft!)
  • Simple design, as with a few others, it fits a cage or dog bed frame easily.
  • Stuffed quite heavily for its size (and flat appearance! )

CONS

  • The design offers no siding (only the mattress.)
  • Non-stick quality doesn’t work as well as manufacturer claims (it does work.)

Fur Heaven Pet Dog Bed

Fur Heaven Pet Dog Bed

The Fur Heaven Pet Dog Bed has a really neat design. It looks just like Fido’s little sofa! This means Fido finally has arms to incorporate into his cuddle experience. I would dare say that if you own a sofa that matches one of the available colors, Fido’s bed will match the rest of your living room!

The price category is in the medium tier; not as expensive as memory foam but a more expensive model than an economy bed.

PROS

  • Designed for orthopedic use like some of the other models.
  • Almost as firm as some of the memory foams (polyurethane.)
  • Arms serve as supportive, fiber filled bolsters.

CONS

  • The manufacturer even warns: not for teething dogs!
  • While foam is quite firm (read supportive,) not as orthopedic in quality as others.

Milliard Orthopedic Memory Foam Dog Bed

Milliard Orthopedic Memory Foam Dog Bed

The Milliard Orthopedic Memory Foam Dog Bed is of a very simple design. It is essentially a very flat, sort of low rectangle. Many pet owners feel that it looks like a pillow. As far as pricing goes, it’s another middle of the road option.

Actual memory foam isn’t seen that often with mid-tier options, however (unless they are at the higher end of the mid-tier.) Oftentimes, fully stuffed orthopedics in this range will utilize other foams. More expensive options might have a better design with sides, and this shouldn't go overlooked either.

PROS

  • Lightweight, cost-effective and the most simple of all designs.
  • The coating on fibers that makes bed anti-microbial.
  • Contains memory foam even though simple design.

CONS

  • Rectangular design with non-rounded corners (Fido might find awkward.)
  • Some pet owners have issues with the quality of material after washing. Perhaps the user has to be more careful than even the directions recommend? Many say this assists.
  • Might look similar to pillow around the house and give Fido bad habits?

Dogbed4less Orthopedic Memory Foam Dog Bed

Dogbed4less Orthopedic Memory Foam Dog Bed

The Dogbed4less Orthopedic Memory Foam Dog Bed has almost the same design as the previous rectangular pillow shaped bed. The materials are of a little more of premium design, however (high-density microsuede, gel material within the memory element and the like.)

Essentially, if you like the rectangular design, and want a higher level of material quality, this might be the bed for you and your Fido.

PROS

  • Gel technology utilized in the memory element.
  • Like other rectangular, flat designs it can more easily be incorporated into other doggy furniture.
  • This type of memory foam technology seems to hold temperature a lot better/longer.

CONS

  • Again, it’s a rectangular sideless design (many people shy away.)
  • A little bit heavier than the other rectangular models.

Big Barker Orthopedic Pillow Dog Bed

Big Barker Orthopedic Pillow Dog Bed

We’ve certainly saved the best for last here! The design for the Big Barker Orthopedic Pillow Dog Bed is unique indeed. We have a memory foam rectangular bed (like the previous two,) but this time there is a pillow arm for Fido to utilize as he cuddles up!

Consumers that tend to shy away from the rectangular models should check this one out.

It might not have sides, but the arm is more than appropriate for Fido to engage with. The quality of the materials is through the roof (American made memory foam and very durable exterior covers,) so this the highest costing of the bunch.

You and Fido will certainly get what you paid for, however!

PROS

  • Manufacturer tested at lasting 10+ years.
  • American made.
  • Clever design (flat rectangular with the addition of arm.)

CONS

  • Could run you over twice the cost of #1 on the list!
  • Weighs more than some of the other models because of materials (as with #9.)

Which Dog Bed Should You Buy?

If our little countdown to #1 has proven anything to you, it’s that if you have the money for #1, you should spring for it! Fido will surely appreciate a design where the simple meets the less simple.

The American memory foam holds coolness very well (though we admit #9 does also,) and the materials are quite tough.

One thing to consider is that Fido will be sleeping on this bed for the rest of his life. Think about this, if two of the beds at half this cost go out, you’ve spent Big Barker money anyway!

You’ve spent the same amount of money, and now Fido will have to get used to a whole new bed. Out of the group, the Big Barker Orthopedic Bed is the only one trying to prove a ten year possible life span. When combined with the luxury the bed has to offer, the Big Barker is the best option for both you and Fido!
